The Vienna Greens have now initially suspended councilor Ömer Öztas – whose recruitment of potential supporters sparked internal criticism – as a member of the party. The party confirmed a related media report on Monday.
There is a request for Öztas. He is said to have “targeted” supporters in the party to secure his re-election. This should be off the table now. According to the “standard”, the mandater can and does comment on the decision within a period of time, as the report says. He recently stated that he finds nothing bad in advertising for himself.
Youngest Viennese state parliament member
Ötzas, who was the youngest member of Vienna’s state parliament and spokesperson for children, youth, education and digitalization, is also defending himself against accusations that he had paid membership fees for some of the individuals concerned – he is said to have brought with him a total of 100 supporters in the party.
No impact on the current mandate
The procedure has no effect on the current mandate. However, according to the report, the suspension during the course of the exclusion procedure means that it should not be implemented for the ongoing list of the greens.
It would not be possible to reintroduce the municipal council. The list will be resolved during a state assembly of the Greens on February 22.
