The recently concluded strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran is already having its first concrete effects. Tehran confirmed on Monday the purchase of several Russian Sukhoi-35 fighter jets.
This is the first time an Islamic Republic official has confirmed the purchase of the Su-35 jets. In November, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Tehran’s leadership had signed deals to purchase Russian fighter jets. However, Revolutionary Guards Commander Ali Shadmani did not say how many fighter jets had been purchased or whether they had already been delivered to Iran.
Strategic partnership between isolated people
Early this month, Iran and Russia entered into a strategic partnership and announced an expansion of “military-technical cooperation.” Experts also see the cooperation as a response to the growing political isolation of both countries, which has increased significantly since the Russian attack on Ukraine. Strict international sanctions are weighing heavily on the economies and financial systems of Moscow and Tehran.
Iran also has outdated American aircraft
Last year, Russia also agreed a strategic partnership with North Korea, which includes mutual military assistance in the event of an attack by a third country. According to reports, the agreement does not contain such a support clause.
Iran’s air force has only a few dozen fighter jets, including Russian fighter jets and aging American aircraft acquired before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
