In an interview with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Senskyr Senskyr asked for strong military support and security guarantees in the case of a ceasefiring -Fires with Russia.
Because: only this could prevent Moscow from experiencing the war at a later date, Senskyj was convinced in an interview with the Italian newspaper “Il Foglio”. At the same time, he complained that Ukraine “gave away” his nuclear weapons.
He also spoke with Trump about the Memorandum of Budapest from 1994, in which the US, Great Britain and Russia gave the former Soviet republics of Ukraine, Witarus and Kazakhstan strong security guarantees in exchange for the elimination of all nuclear weapons in their field. In the meantime everything turned out to be different. When Russia occupied the Crimean Peninsula and the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine, Kiev asked the guarantee for intervention, but there was no response. “Ukraine gave his nuclear weapons away,” Senskyj summarized.
In retrospect, it would have been better if Ukraine had received NATO security guarantees at the time. “So if I exchanged nuclear weapons, I would exchange them for something very strong, something that every attacker can really stop, despite his size, territory, his army, etc. – and that is a strong army and the safety block NATO,” said Senskyj.
“We exchanged nuclear weapons before the war,” he explained Trump. Nevertheless, he was convinced that the US president could guarantee a strong position for Ukraine. “Because of the sanctions, the power of the United States, the economy – he can accelerate this, in my opinion he can do it faster than any other in the world,” Senskyj said.
