In 1962 it took longer – government controls to register length

Date:

More than four months have passed since the elections of the National Council on September 29, but a new government is still not in sight. Only once in the history of the Second Republic – 62 years ago! – On board the government lasted longer after an election.

If it is not surprisingly fast with the blue-black coalition negotiations and the new ministerial ranks will take place until next Wednesday, the previous record duration will also be surpassed.

Duration of 129 days of record
The longest government formation since 1945 took a total of 129 days: after the election of November 18, 1962, the negotiations between the ÖVP and Spöb dragged on for months before the two parties finally reluctant – one last time before the Solo regulations phase – on one New edition agreed to the Grand Coalition.

The government under Chancellor Alfons Gorbach (ÖVP) was eventually appointed on March 27, 1963 by federal president Adolf Schärf.

Secondary duration cracked
The current government formation process is on January 31 on day 124. From midnight, the record of the second longest duration is already.

It took a total of 124 days 25 years ago before the first black and blue coalition came into office. The complicated starting situation after the election on 3 October 1999 should show parallels with the current situation: the Spö, the strongest vote, ended with a coalition with the FPö, which was in second place for the first time, the third party ÖVP wanted to in opposition.

Weekly coalition negotiations between the Spö and ÖVP failed, then it went in no time. Only two weeks later the first black and blue coalition, which was already in parallel, was praised on 4 February under ÖVP boss Wolfgang Schüssel.
