Because of the rise of Trump? – France discusses the birth principle

Date:

After the rise of Trump on US citizenship, a debate about the birth principle has now also flared up in France. There is currently a mix of birthplace and origin principle in the country.

Children born in France only receive nationality if at least one parent is French or was born in France. Children of migrants who are born and growing up in France are citizenship at the age of 18.

“We need a broad social discussion about it. The question has long been fermentation: what does it mean to be French: what rights and obligations do this entail? “To be French, you must respect the way of life and the Republican principles,” said the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau.

The vice-chief of the conservative Republicans, François-Xavier Bellamy, said that the birth principle is no longer sustainable. On Thursday, the National Assembly adopted a legislative proposal from the party, which increases the obstacles for the claim to the French nationality for the island of Mayotte.

Accordingly, both parents have had to live in France for three years, so that a child can receive citizenship. So far, only one parent should have been legal in France for three months. Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin had argued to completely abolish the birth principle for Mayotte.

On the French island in the Indian Ocean, the birthplace principle has been more limited since 2018 than in the rest of France. The parliamentary group leader of the Right -Wing Populist Party National (RN), Marine Le Pen, wants to abolish the principle for the entire country.
