Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu criticized today “lack of sensitivity” which in his opinion exists in the judicial area when trying”the inequality between Basque and Spanish”, regarding the two judgments of the Supreme Court of the Basque Country (TSJPV) against the Basque language, the last of which was announced yesterday. In this sense, the Lehendakari has announced that both will appeal because the Basque government does not share it.
Urkullu expressed himself in these terms when he was questioned by the Vox parliamentarian Amaia Martínez during the audit session to be held in the Basque Parliament this Friday. Martínez asked Urkullu when the Basque government will apply the provisions of the TSJPV ruling regarding the law of local entities and the decree regulating it. The Lehendakari has indicated that this does not refer to the executive branch, but to local institutions.
The Lehendakari, in his response in Basque, recalled that the verdict is not final and that they will appeal to the Supreme Court. He then denounced, already in Spanish, that Vox “has legalized a politically resolved issue”, referring to the broad consensus with which the municipal law was approved, and emphasized that guaranteeing language rights is an obligation of all public powers, including those of the judiciary.
In this context, he assured that it is undeniable that “Basque and Spanish are not on an equal footing, and there is still a long way to go to achieve that equality, including in the legal field”, which he criticized for “lack of sensitivity to legal issues”. to tackle these problems.” problems”.
Moreover, he recalled that the Constitutional Court deleted only one article of the Law on Local Entities (6.2) and that the rest of the rule was therefore in line with the Constitution. According to the Lehendakari it is It is “worrying” that the TSJPV “has gone further than the Constitutional Court”. Likewise, he referred to the PP’s invocation of the law (yesterday’s second ruling of the TSJPV is a response to this) when it was the PP government, with Mariano Rajoy, that signed the agreement in the bilateral commission on the same rule signed. “It attracts a lot of attention,” he emphasizes.
EH Bildu confirms “a retrograde, hateful and ignorant attack” on the Basque language
In another parliamentary question from EH Bildu on this issue, parliamentarian Jasone Agirre has chosen to join forces and oppose ‘this offensive’ against Basque, because this language is as official as Spanish. He also proclaimed, “It is ours because we are a nation.” . “They cannot impose another language on us,” he stressed after denouncing that these two sentences are not “an isolated case” but are part of “a retrograde attack by the far right, hateful and ignorant” on the Basque language.
In his response, the Minister of Culture and Language Policy said: Bingen Zupiriahas assured that the Basque government will fight “in all possible cases” the “worrying” judicial decisions and political positions that question the official status of the Basque language and the self-government of Euskadi itself.
Zupiria added that the Basque government will propose any legal changes “that are necessary,” even at state level, to put an end to certain interpretations that “question the official status of the Basque Country.”
