The unemployment rate rises in the BAC to 7.5% in the third quarter

According to Eustat data, there are 1,300 more unemployed and 4,300 more working people than in the previous quarter. However, in the past year the number of unemployed fell by 4,700 and the unemployment rate fell from 8% to 7.5%.

The unemployment rate has increased to 7.5% in the Basque Autonomous Community in the third quarter of 2023, a tenth of a percentage point more than in the second quarter of this year, according to data published today by the Basque Statistical Institute (Eustat).

The number of standing peoplethat is, the number of people looking for work, actively looking and also available to work, is estimated at 78,900 in the third quarter of the year, 1,300 more than the previous quarter.

The data also shows that there were 4,300 in the third quarter busy people more than in the previous quarter. The total number of employed people in the second quarter of 2023 will be 975,900.

The occupancy rate, calculated as the percentage of workers aged 16 to 64 over the total of those ages, increased by 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and stood at 70.4%. This percentage is 73.4% among men and 67.4% among women.


Through historic areas, in Arabia and in Gipuzkoa The unemployment rate increased by 0.8% and 0.1% to 7.8% and 6.3% respectively. On the contrary, inside Bizkaiathe unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage point to 8.1%. As for the capitals, unemployment in Vitoria-Gasteiz increases by 1,700 people; On the other hand, in Bilbao the numbers fell by 900 and in San Sebastián by 1,300 people, compared to the previous quarter.

Referring to occupationthe highest percentage is that of Gipuzkoa with 72.2% (0.3% more); In second place is Bizkaia with 69.7% (0.4% more) and finally Araba with 69.3% (0.4% more). As for the capitals, in Donostia/San Sebastián employment increases by 1,400 people; On the other hand, it decreases in Vitoria-Gasteiz (-400) and in Bilbao (-1700).

Employment is increasing in all sectors, except the primary sector

The labor force is growing in industry by 2,500 people (1.3%), in services by 2,100 (0.3%) and in construction by 200 (0.4%); In the primary sector, on the other hand, it decreases by 400 people (4.6%).

In terms of the type of employee recruitment, the numbers of people on permanent contracts increased by 5,800 compared to the previous quarter and compared to the previous year by 41,500 people.
