The collective Gara memory has analyzed the situation in which the project for the creation of the memorial center on March 3 at the Church of San Francisco de Zaramaga, at a press conference offered this Monday.
Joshua Santamariaa member of the collective, has indicated that the process is currently underway “frozen”, “because there is a lack of political will among the institutions involved”. “It was difficult for us to turn the project into something that the institutions would consider to be their property. They never provided us with anything in writing, it was all words,” he stressed. In that sense, it has emphasized that “little or no progress” has been made since the signing of a protocol of intent was announced in February 2021.
“Both the institutions and the diocese have committed themselves to establishing this Memorial Center in the not too distant future. In terms of budgets, for example, we have regressed, because less money has been allocated to the project and because the budget item has disappeared to sign an agreement with Martxoak 3 and Memoria Gara, which aimed to victim participation and give us the material to form the center’s funds,” he added.
“We demand that they promote this project resolutely. Our hand is still out, but they must guarantee the participation of Martxoak 3 and Memoria Gara and provide us with material and financial resources for its commissioning. The deadlines are not as important as the methodology, but without it terms it is impossible to move forward, we cannot leave more years empty,” he concluded.
