Although MPs receive a minimum of 9376 euros per month from the state, they are allowed to earn some extra, with a few exceptions. For at least seven members of the National Council, this income is even higher than their salary, as the parliament has now announced. (A total of 107) men earn significantly more than (74) women.
While almost half of male mandate holders receive more than 4,000 euros on top of their salary, only eleven women fall into this range. The top earners include Secretary-General Kurt Egger, his predecessor Peter Haubner, entrepreneur Martin Engelberg (all ÖVP) and Gerhard Kaniak, Harald Stefan and Christian Ragger of the FPÖ. Kaniak is a pharmacist, Stefan is a notary and Ragger is a lawyer. The only woman in the highest income bracket is Karin Doppelbauer of NEOS, who also works as a manager at the American computer company Dell.
Part-time jobs must be reported
In total, the MPs currently hold 259 paid and a further 852 honorary positions. Parliament has an overview because these professions have to be registered. It is not necessary to indicate the exact amount of additional earnings, but one of the five income categories. Last year at least seven MPs earned more than 12,000 euros a month, another 14 people had an additional income between 8001 and 12,000 euros.
Women usually earn less than 4000 euros
The situation is different for women in the National Council. Only eleven of the 74 MPs reported an extra income of more than 4000 euros. At the same time, however, they usually work full-time in the National Council (28 women versus 21 men). The club officials, the three presidents of the National Council, members of the government and secretaries of state are banned from other professions. However, they receive a higher state salary. Two ÖVP MPs who moved on at the end of December have not been included in the statistics because they do not have to announce their salaries until next year.
