Two earthquakes measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook Hormozgán province, causing severe damage. Authorities believe they have already rescued all the people trapped under the rubble.
At least five people have been killed and 44 injured in two earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale and a host of aftershocks that have rocked southern Iran, Iranian media have reported.
The earthquakes hit the south Hormozgan Provincie Province and especially the town of Sayeh Khosh, in the Bandar Khamir area, near the Strait of Hormuz, which suffered serious damage.
“Five people have been killed and 44 injured as a result of the earthquakes in Hormozgán,” said Iranian emergency services spokesman Mojtaba Khalidi. He added that 22 injured remain in hospital and the rest have been discharged.
The governor of Hormozgán province, Mehdi Dustí, has confirmed after several hours of rescue work that they believe there is no one left under the rubble.
Nearly 80 villages are without electricity as a result of the quakes, although service was restored as early as 53. In addition, water in the affected region has been cut off and several bridges and roads have been damaged.
Iran has strong seismicity as the country lies on the boundary of several tectonic plates and is crossed by several faults.
In November 2017, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed 620 and injured more than 12,000 in northwestern Kermanshah province, while in December 2003 nearly 30,000 people died in another in the southern city of Bam.
