The European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom have agreed on the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol. The agreement thus marks the culmination of negotiations between the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, who are meeting today in the city of Windsor (east London). Pending the details of the agreement, the path is expected to open to resolve the customs and political issues created by Brexit.
Both leaders are expected to a Joint press conference at 4.30 pm to formalize the deal, which is the culmination of years of negotiations and should pave the way for the future post-Brexit relationship between the EU and the UK. Von der Leyen is then received at nearby Windsor Castle by King Carlos III.
Sunak, for his part, will appear before the House of Commons of the British Parliament at 6.30pm to give details and answer questions from the deputies.
Under the current protocol, Northern Ireland is within the internal community and the UK market, so controls on trade between the UK and the EU are carried out between the island of Great Britain and Ireland, avoiding a physical border between the two Irish and makes it possible not to harm the Good Friday 1998 peace agreement.
Located in the Irish Sea, this commercial border has also led to political problems among unionists who believe it damages their relationship with the rest of the UK.
