The militant Islamist Taliban who rule Afghanistan have accused international aid agencies of theft. “Foreign non-governmental organizations have not come to rebuild Afghanistan,” said Mohammed Yunis Rashid, deputy information minister in Paktia province. “They came to Afghanistan to steal and loot,” the deputy minister claimed, according to a video released Tuesday by Tolonews.
Rashid’s words are the latest example of the Taliban government’s continued criticism of international aid agencies. The extremist group has been back in power in Afghanistan for two years now. In early August, a Taliban official said that by 2022, about 220 aid agencies should have ceased operations. According to a US report, the Taliban also have a major influence on UN aid programs.
Afghan women are not allowed to work for NGOs
The country with about 40 million inhabitants is still struggling with a humanitarian crisis. At the same time, the Taliban’s misogynistic policies have been the subject of international criticism.
