Interview with the mayor of Azpeitia, Nagore Alkorta, after the informational meeting of Statkraft

Date:

The mayor of Azpeitia has announced that they will now open a round of contacts with the various agents of the municipality, including individuals, companies and even the platform that opposes the Piaspe project.

The Mayor of Azpeitia, Nagore Alkorta, has agreed to the informative meeting held yesterday in the municipality of Gipuzkoan together with the Norwegian company Statkraft about the wind farm it wants to build between Azpeitia, Zestoa and Errezil. According to Alkorta, the meeting is “just the beginning” of a process that will take “a very long time” and will require more meetings.

In a short interview given to Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program, the mayor (EH Bildu) revealed that after this first contact, which Alkorta described as a “transparency exercise”, they will open a round of contacts with the various agents of the municipality, including individuals, companies and even the platform that opposes the Piaspe project.

Alkorta has acknowledged that the meeting, which lasted about three hours, “wasn’t easy” and that “there were moments of tension”, which he said “were expected”. “Since the information came out of the Lehendakaritza on September 13, we have experienced a media frenzy (…) We were already expecting people with different profiles, people who are against the project. But we wanted to hold the meeting with all citizens of Azpeitia, not only with those who agree,” he explained.

The mayor has defended the need to “energy planning” faced with a climate crisis and a “very serious” situation, which must be accompanied by a transition energy, that “yes or yes” it must be done “through renewable energy sources, although “not at any cost”, has nuanced. Alkorta sees Statkraft’s proposal as “a distinctive element” because it is committed to “a new model of participation between local entities and organizations such as the EVE, but also between people from Azpeitia and local companies”.
