Tyrolean NEOS state spokesman and club president Dominik Oberhofer was elected top candidate for early state elections on September 25 at a general meeting of the opposition party in Innsbruck in Innsbruck on Saturday. Immediately after his election, he formulated a clear claim to power: “We will be part of the next government”. The NEOS frontman had attacked the ruling ÖVP earlier in his speech.
About 300 members were asked to choose the top candidate and the other places on the list – about 60 gathered at the Innsbruck hotel, the rest voted online. In the end, Oberhofer was voted the NEOS top candidate with 96 percent.
In his speech, Oberhofer launched a sweeping attack on the ÖVP in the state and federal government. “With its policies over the decades, the ÖVP has broken the promise of prosperity after the war,” the state spokesman muttered. The People’s Party has also resigned in the field of economic policy: “They have no idea of a market economy”.
Black-Green “at the end”
Black-Green in Tyrol stole their responsibility with the new elections: “They are at the end, they have given up. We, on the other hand, are ready.” The state government has failed – in pandemic management, the fight against inflation and many other areas.
“Times are changing. And we NEOS are changing times. We’re going to raise the kids wings,” said the club president, referring to former Pink Party leader Matthias Strolz. Together they will change Tyrol, Oberhofer said, but without making a concrete coalition statement.
Oberhofer’s only candidate
Oberhofer will lead the party to a state election for the second time, he is the only candidate. In mid-March, Oberhofer was re-elected as state spokesman with 87.5%. The Tyrolean NEOS obtained 5.21 percent of the vote in the last state elections in 2018 and has since been represented in the state parliament for the first time, with two mandates.
