The Austrian and Ukrainian parliaments want to cooperate more closely in the future in the field of education and infrastructure. NEOS MP Helmut Brandstätter announced this on Twitter on Saturday. He was visiting Kiev with party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger.
They met, among others, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ruslan Stefantschuk, who had delivered a speech at the National Council in Vienna in mid-June. “We MPs go in and out of our parliament building and hardly think about security,” Meinl-Reisinger wrote on Twitter. Ukraine’s parliament must protect windows from splinters and barricade them with sandbags because Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want the facility to exist.
Raised EU Flag
The two MEPs were present on Friday when the EU flag was ceremonially raised in Parliament, in the presence of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “A touching moment,” noted the NEOS boss. About a week ago, Ukraine, along with Moldova, received official EU candidate status from the EU summit. However, this does not mean that accession negotiations have started.
Meinl-Reisinger and Brandstätter would be on their way to Austria on Saturday. Brandstätter stated that he had been in Kiev for the past three days as chairman of the parliamentary friendship group. Stefantschuk also reported on the meeting.
