The US government has announced that it has direct discussions with Islamist Hamas. The special envoy Steve Witkoff was authorized to talk to everyone, said Trump’s press spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
The White House is negotiating directly with the terrorist organization. The government of Israel was consulted on this issue, Leavitt said. She did not want to comment on the content of the conversations. US President Donald Trump in fact believes in dialogue “with people around the world” in the interest of the Americans, Leavitt said.
“Israel has informed the United States its position in terms of direct discussions with Hamas,” the Israeli government commented on the conversations. The circles of Hamas had previously confirmed that there was contact with the White House with regard to American hostages and an agreement at the end of the war in the Gaza Strip. No agreement had yet been reached. Hamas is classified by the US government as a terrorist organization.
Sanctions against Houthi members decided
The US government has also decided to sanctions against the Jemeni Houthi militia. “The leaders of the Houthi militia have shown their intention to continue their ruthless and destabilizing actions in the Red Sea,” said the American Minister of Finance Scott Bessent. The sanctions relate to seven highly members of the militia and a man with connections with the group. They are accused of weapon smuggling. The contact person would have recruited citizens for the battle on the Russian side in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the White House had again placed the Houthi militia on the list of foreign terrorist organizations. This enables American justice to pursue possible cooperation. The terrorist organization has a large part of Yemen and attacks ships in the Red Sea and in the Gulf of Aden since the start of the Gaza war, but also destinations in Israel with drones and missiles. It supports Hamas.
