The pace in German domestic politics is still very high. Two weeks after the election of the Bundestag, the SPD and CDU/CSU successfully completed their explorations and will be reported to the coalition negotiations next week.
CDU boss Friedrich Merz said on Saturday, who now recommends to conduct coalition interviews, as well as the chairman of the CDU and the SPD. The Union parties and the Social Democrats had reached a huge financial package after the exploratory start last Friday to have more money for defense and investments in infrastructure. After that, the explorations on topics such as migration and citizen allowance, in which the trade union insists on a turn in politics.
The red line of the SPD
Merz had announced in the election campaign to prevent illegal access consistently. The SPD rejects factual border closures. Party leader Lars Klingbeil pulled a clear red line here. But everyone is aware that something has to change in the asylum policy.
At the same time, the trade union is investigating cooperation with De Groenen in the Bundestag. The reason is the debt -financed billion -dollar package for defense and infrastructure, which cannot be decided without a majority of two thirds in the Bundestag. The Greens demand that being eligible for climate protection measures are taken into account with this – a claim that causes unrest in the Union. Because the CSU rejected a collaboration with the Greens from the start. A power struggle within the trade union is programmed.
The coming days will be decisive
While formulations are disputed in Berlin, the world changes. Donald Trump asks NATO that Russia is testing the borders of Europe, and the German economy is in a crisis. Merz wants to spend more money for defense – but how this should be compatible with the debt remains open. Here Merz has indicated the willingness to talk. The coming days will be decisive. Can Merz and Klingbeil find a basis for a stable coalition? Or do the differences remain too large? If the coalition fails, there is a risk of new elections – a nightmare for the SPD.
Merz has the choice: does he lead to a new era as a determined Chancellor? Or does he fail because of the contradictions of his own party and political reality? The only thing that is certain is that the time runs for tactical games of parties.
