The new coalition confirmed the temporary stop in the family management of refugees on Wednesday. “The political will is caught,” said the Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). Because the planned steps with the Greens were not possible, they are now only being implemented.
According to Karner, the Ministry of the Interior is to develop a corresponding legal regulation and to develop a so -driven integration barometer. This should serve as a basis for the future limitation of the reunification of the family. The barometer shows taxes for individual systems such as education, health, social affairs and life. The project is led by the federal chancellery. In addition, government members Karner must provide all data and documents that reflect the situation and predictions.
60 applications in February
The reunification family is currently not so much a subject. In February 2024 there were almost 1000 applications, only 60 in February. Moreover, the authorities check stricter. A temporary exposure is necessary so that the overburdened systems continued to work, said Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP).

Outside the government there was criticism of the project. The human rights organization Amnesty International speaks about a clear violation of international law. The Red Youth organizations gathered on Wednesday for the federal chancellery in Vienna to prove against the decision. “From our point of view, this decision is an exhaustion of the right wing positions, as in particular represents the FPö in Austria.”
