Dispute in the Government – Procedure for the Austria climate plan

Date:

The EU committee hired the infringement procedure against Austria due to the lack of or incomplete climate plans. The federal government should have submitted a second version of the Climate Plan in June 2024, but this was delayed in half a year.

The reason was a dispute in the then coalition of ÖVP and Greens, which was publicly held by former climate protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Groenen) and former European minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP). Edtstadler withdrew a concept that Gisser had submitted. This did not agree with the government, she said. Gewishler saw it differently.

In the final version, which was determined by the Council of Ministers in December 2024, the “Questions from the Commission were answered and technical changes and updates were made.” The EU committee has now announced that he officially hired the violation procedure on Wednesday.

Bewler sees the decision confirmed in her procedure. “Last year, after long negotiations with the ÖVP, we presented a strong National Energy and Climate Plan (Nekp) that helps to lower energy costs, to safeguard jobs in Austria and meet the EU climate goals”.

Here you can see a message from the greens.

The new government must now implement the plan quickly. For example, households should be supported in the heating exchange, in particular those with low incomes, and the billions of climate wire subsidies should be abolished. “Less dirt in the air and more money in the Börserl must be the goal,” said Gewessler.
