With a veto threat, the Hungarian government forced the cancellation of various Russian oligarchs of an EU sanction list. As a means of pressure, Hungary has put a possible veto on the table against the expansion of the Russian sanctions.
The exact background of the Hungarian approach is unclear. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had stated several times that he generally does not consider the sanctions of the EU Russia as appropriate. The EU sanctions usually include travel limits, freezing assets and the prohibition of providing funds or other economic means. In most cases they were imposed against Ukraine in response to the unjustified and unfounded military aggression of Russia from a EU perspective.
Among the liberated people include Wjatseslaw Mosque Cantor. The majority owner of the Russian artificial manufacturer Akron, who, in addition to Russian, also has British and Israeli citizenship, has been on the EU sanction list since April 2022.
Former National Council President Campaign for Cantor
The European Jewish congress, whose chairman he was still, gave himself offset and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision. According to media reports, there were also efforts in Austria to remove Cantor from the sanction list.
The former chairman of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), called the punitive measures “regrettable” in July 2023. For this reason, he supported “like all other Jewish communities, including the Ukrainian”, the assessment of the accusations of the former EJC President, said a written statement of his speender. According to a report from the daily newspaper “Der Standard”, Sobotka said that he intervened with high-ranking EU politicians in favor of Cantors when visiting Brussels.
Support also from Macron
Cantor’s successor to the EJC Tip, former IKG president Ariel Muzicant, said that Kantor only came to the sanction list because “the Poles had to pick a chicken with him”. In addition to Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, French President Emmanuel Macron also supported him.
