Federal President Alexander van der Bellen visited his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb on Thursday. “The watch cannot be reversed, yesterday’s world is no longer. It’s up to us to make the best of it. The world is in change.”
Given this knowledge, the countries of Europe must “find together and find new confidence”. Federal President Van der Bellen and Stubb had agreed on Thursday after a meeting in Helsinki.
“Our ship, no matter how stable years ago, is in a storm. But you have to keep racing in a storm. If necessary, up the wind and electricity upstream. The Russian attack war against Ukraine has brought the horrors of war back to our continent,” Van der Bellen said.
“Geopolitric threatening”
“Geopolitics has become confusing, suddenly and threatening.” But the EU could show strength and resilience. “The EU has brought together a group of very different countries and created something that is larger than the sum of its parts.” Topics such as security and defense are suddenly essential again.
“Single Fight not an option”
Van der Bellen substantiated his photo of the “ship in the storm”: “Giving up and going down is not an option. A few fight is also not an option. A rower only does not reach anything. The clock cannot be reversed, the world of yesterday is no longer. It is up to us to make the best of it.”

Stubb does not miss neutrality
The best for Finland was joining NATO, Stub said. He misses the abandoned neutrality “in no way”. Finland was prescribed by the then Soviet Union after the Second World War, argued Stubb and made comparisons with the present: “What does Russia do in Ukraine? Russia wants to neutralize Ukraine.” He was very proud that Finland is until NATO.
Van der Bellen did not hesitate the neutrality of Austria, but emphasized that this did not mean “the right of the stronger accepting”. Given the geopolitical situation, it is important that the EU countries would also work together in military affairs and defensive questions.
