Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen fought sharp criticism of Washington after a meeting with his American colleague Marco Rubio. “I made it crystal clear that claims and statements regarding the annexation of Greenland are not only unacceptable and disrespectful,” wrote Rasmussen to X. “You are also an interruption of international law.”
The former Danish head of government characterized the meeting with Rubio on Thursday in Brussels as “honest and direct”. He posted two photos. On the one hand, the two politicians are next to each other, on the other hand a champagne bottle of the French brand Pol Roger can be seen on a mobile phone screen, dedicated to the legendary British Prime Minister Winston Churchill preference an allusion to Churchill’s indomission in the World War.
However, Rasmussen removed the message again after a short time to re -publish it without the photo with the champagne bottle.
Rubio had clearly stood behind the annexation plans of the US President Donald Trump and meant that they were “no joke”. The government in Copenhagen had previously stopped with sharp tones against Washington not to pour oil into the fire. On the contrary, she tried to meet the US government at a factual level. Minister of Foreign Affairs Rasmussen had indicated last week in a video of the willingness to talk about the American security interests and pointed out that the United States had been much more present at Greenland in the past.
Frederersiksen rejected Trump’s plans
The Danish head of the Mette Frederiksen head had clearly rejected the acquisition of Trump on Thursday during a visit to Greenland. “You can’t annex another country,” she told the US government on Thursday. At the same time, it confirmed the offer to the US to strengthen security presence on the Arctic island on the basis of the bilateral agreement that has been around since the 1950s. The United States currently maintains only one base in Greenland, in Pituffik (Thule).
In recent weeks, Trump had registered claims for the raw material -rich Island and has already threatened to record Greenland to record the United States if necessary. Greenland and Denmark determine an annexation. The government in Copenhagen sees itself as the guardian of the law of the Groenlanders on self -determination, who has had a letter to become independent since 2009. According to surveys, an overwhelming majority of the Groenlanders reject it to be part of the United States.
