Because of the Corona Pandemic, the government had to spend a lot of money. A report on the total costs shows that the Ministry of Health took 11.46 billion euros for Corona measures from the start of Pandemiege 2020 to the end of 2024.
In the report of the Ministry of Health to the National Council, EUR 5.18 billion seems to be the largest position for the extensive tests in international comparison.
Costs for tests in schools not included
In the report that was brought to the National Council at the start of the week and about which the “Kleine Zeitung” initially reported, the costs for tests in schools and companies are not included because they were accepted by the Ministry of Education or Labor. As part of the test programs that were funded by the Ministry of Health and carried out by the Federal States, at the end of June 2023, around 208 million Corona tests were performed, of which more than half (110 million) were considerably more expensive PCR tests. There are also approximately 51 million apoples tests in Austria.
More than a third of the tests in Vienna
There were major differences between the federal states: more than a third of the tests – specifically 75.6 million – was carried out in Vienna, where less than a quarter of the total population lives. In Lower Austria – with around 1.7 million inhabitants behind Vienna, the state with the most inhabitants – 41.2 million tests were registered, but only 23 million in Styria with at least 1.2 million inhabitants.
According to the Ministry of Health, a total of around 1.77 billion euros were spent on vaccinations against the coronavirus. Of these, 1.0 billion was used for vaccine purchase, the rest for transport, storage, removal, e-vaccination pass and vaccination campaigns. A total of 21.5 million vaccinations were administered by the end of 2024. About 357 million euros were spent on medication for the treatment of Corona diseases. Expenditure on protective equipment was good for 627 million euros. The waste water monitoring for monitoring the pandemic process, which has caused the costs of 4.2 million euros since 2020, was relatively favorable.
Costs of other ministries that have not taken into account
A larger budget post is expenditure for income for those who had to separate themselves according to the provisions of epidemic law. The costs of EUR 2.44 billion were incurred for this. 225 million euros were made by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs for measures in the social sector, for example to combat the consequences of poverty and long -term care. The report of other ministries for Corona-related measures is not included in the report.
