Panama Canal dispute agreement makes it possible to station American troops

Date:

“To further improve our national security, my government will regain the Panama Canal, and we have already started it,” said US President Donald Trump in the US Congress in early March. Finally, the pressure on the Panamaic government was enormously increased. Washington justifies this with his own safety interests and the risk of the increasing influence of China. An agreement has now been concluded with which we station troops.

The agreement published by Panama on Thursday (local time) makes the United States, training courses, exercises and a number of other activities at Panama -controlled locations around the channel. However, the establishment of military bases is excluded.

The memorandum between the two governments was signed on Wednesday during the recent Panama visit of the American Minister of Defense Pete Hegseeth. It states that military and civil American employees are able to give training, perform exercises and give equipment in Panama, designated and controlled institutions. The agreement is initially limited to three years and can be extended.

With the agreement, US President Trump receives an important concession for his demand for more influence from the United States on the important Waterweg. In recent months, Trump had repeatedly threatened by the fact that the United States could take control of the canal ever built by them. He criticized his Chinese influence on the Waterweg between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific, making five percent of world trade.
