Negotiations end – SPD and Groenen reign Hamburg

Date:

Hamburg remains red green. About seven weeks after the citizens’ choice, the SPD and the Groenen agreed to continue their coalition. Large shifts in the staff are not expected.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) will be chosen again on 7 May. Before the elections, he had expressed the hope that he could claim more responsibilities for his party in the future. For example, the energy area that could switch from the environment to the economic authority would be considered. Moreover, the tax authorities could be responsible for the districts in the future, so far this was the Science Authority.

Teams had been negotiated together since 27 March. At the end of the conversations it was about the occupation of the senate posts and the reduction of the authorities. So far, the SPD has represented seven senators and the Greens have delivered four. It is still open that will lead the environmental department. Senator Jens Kerstan (Greens) has still negotiated the coalition agreement, but is no longer available for a different period for health reasons.

SPD landed in the first place for CDU
The SPD had again become considerably strongest in the elections on March 2, the Greens were moved to third place by the CDU (see video above). With around 1.8 million inhabitants, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and at the same time one of the smallest federal states.
