Final in the National Council – Nehammer surprised with apology

Date:

On the last plenary day before the National Council’s summer break, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) surprised with an apology. Specifically, it was an urgent request from the FPÖ about the party finances of the ÖVP to Secretary of State Claudia Plakolm, which she did not answer adequately. The head of government promised that the answers would be submitted in writing at a later date.

On the other hand, the chancellor defended the cash register merger, which had recently been negatively in the news after a critical report by the Court of Auditors. Nehammer said it was undeniable that there were additional costs initially rather than the announced patient billion. However, the head of government remains behind the “efficiency reform” because there is always high start-up funding for such projects and only then the efficiency gains that generate savings.

Chancellor rejects fuel price cap
Nehammer again rejected price ceilings, for example for fuel. So far, this has proved ineffective in fighting inflation in the countries that have tried it. The Chancellor’s verdict on the war in Ukraine is bleak. Nehammer spoke again about the war logic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who sees the end of the war only when the goal of aggression has been achieved. The chancellor also warned against getting closer and closer to the borders of a third world war. Therefore, the levels of discussion must remain open.

In addition to the resolutions already planned, additional matters were discussed in the last plenary days before the summer. For example, refugees from Ukraine were included in the child benefit on Friday and a bonus for the self-employed was added on Thursday to compensate for inflation.
