The Ministry of the Environment encourages companies, associations and religious institutions to phase out oil and gas. They should be encouraged to switch from fossil fuels to renewable ones. In concrete terms, up to 45 percent of the investment costs would be financed, according to the ministry. The upper limit is six million euros.
The exact subsidy amount depends, among other things, on the type of new system. In addition to phasing out oil and gas, the thermal rehabilitation of buildings housing vulnerable people is also being promoted. Examples are women’s shelters, children’s homes and refugee shelters, although it makes no difference for financing whether the operator is a municipality or an association. The ministry wants to make money available for better thermal insulation in the building and the installation of climate-friendly heating. A total of 45 million euros has been earmarked for this, which will be financed from the Austrian Recovery and Resilience Plan.
CO₂ limit is increased
Another point is projects for sustainable heat supply. Here the Ministry of the Environment raised the upper limit from 4.5 million euros to 6 million euros per project. Included are climate-friendly district heating and cooling networks and geothermal systems. Companies that in the future convert their fossil fuel heating to a more climate-friendly heat supply will also receive more financing than before. Systems under 50 kilowatt hours are financed with a maximum of 7,500 euros, larger ones with a maximum of 12,000 euros, the Ministry of the Environment announced this weekend. The CO₂ ceiling will be raised from the current €60 to €75 per ton of CO₂ avoided per year.
Since Russia has stopped supplying gas to Europe, prices have not only risen, but the call for renewables has also increased. Some representatives of politics and business are in favor of the latter.
