During the session – Angry Citizen “Airs” on Graz City Regulation

Date:

Brenzliger incident during the last Graz Council meeting: a man first insulted and threatened a city council in the gang of the town hall and then made a gesture of gun from the gallery. He apparently brought him the announced austerity measures in the federal government.

In fact, the decision of the Mobility Plan 2040 was the most important agenda item of the Graz Municipal Council meeting last Thursday. However, the meeting of the “city parliament” was overshadowed by a dangerous incident. A man initially adjusted a city council in the gang of the town hall and insulted and threatened the politician. Then he went to the gallery above the meeting room and also left his tirades from there. “People will take revenge,” he roared.

Motive: Anger about the federal government
Then he even made a gesture of gun to the government bank. The announced savings measures in the federal government – an area in which the influence of Graz City Politics actually wants him to be furious.

The employee of the regulatory guard, who was posted in front of the hall, asked for reinforcements, who was fortunately also present – the man was finally removed.

Safety measures in the Graz Town Hall defective
The incident again causes the discussion about poor security measures in the town hall of Graz. Unlike in judicial buildings or in the country house, there is no security locking. In short, everyone can do the Murmetropolis in the power centers without control. It is not the first incident of this kind: in 2019 there was a arson by the mayor’s office, in 2023 a shotgun was found on the toilet of Rathaus and eventually a bomb threat caused excitement.

Former mayor Siegfried Nagl (ÖVP) therefore also wanted to install an access system – successor Every Kahr (KPö) has rejected this so far. She wants an “open town hall”. The VP club boss Anna Hopper sees this very differently: “This incident has again shown that the security measures in the town hall are not enough,” she shakes her head. “Politicians, employees of the city, but also visitors, must be better protected. We therefore call for a rapid implementation of an access record and stricter access controls.”
