In Portugal, the conservative alliance of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has won the parliamentary elections, according to predictions. Aliança Democática (AD) prevailed with 29 to 34 percent for the Socialist Party (PS).
AD improved by a maximum of six percentage points compared to March 2024, but the absolute majority of 116 parliamentary seats missed them. An unstable minority government therefore waves to the South European country again. Collaboration with the right -wing populists from Chega, who, according to the prediction, took third place by 20 to 24 percent, has recently excluded Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
It was already the third elections since 2022. Montenegro had lost a voice of no confidence in March that he had placed himself. The 52-year-old lawyer had been put in trouble by the opposition because of an opaque affairs of a family business. The last government was only about a year in office.
Sharper migration policy announced
“I have a lot of faith in the Portuguese and the stability that we can achieve with these elections,” said Montenegro, after making his voice in Espinho in the northwest of the country. He had reduced income tax for young people who have increased pensions and announced that migration policy worsens. The previous socialist government had followed a relaxed migration policy. The number of immigrants is now 15 percent of the total population.
About 10.8 million Portuguese were called upon on Sunday to determine the distribution of the 230 seats in Parliament in Lisbon.
