Vision despite usticity – Return to education: “We are not good enough”

Date:

Christoph Return visited Carinthia for the first time as Minister of Education: in Feldkirchen he looked at the largest compulsory school campus in the country – and revealed how savings should be made in the education sector.

A few days ago the new federal minister Christoph Return (Neos) in Feldkirch in Vorarlberg-On Tuesday went to Feldkirchen for his first visit to the Carinthia. Return visited the largest mandatory school campus in the state, which takes a role model, especially when it comes to inclusion and time-out groups.

The latter also visited Mia of the 4A of the US Feldkirchen after the transfer of the 5000th pocket money driver’s license. “As a child I was often with the Ossiacher,” the Neos minister revealed in the Musik-MS Feldkirchen.

Although there was also an exchange between return and educators, an almost in the Tiebelstadt, as it existed in Vorarlberg. In the country, countless directors and teachers had asked for an appointment. It is not surprising.

There is uncertainty for many educators and rectors after reducing a reduction of 76 million euros as part of the government savings program only this year.

However, the Neos minister replies: “For example, it is about savings in the administration, for example due to less external orders, digitization-now print less than before and by a few positions in the Ministry of Education without use.”

The goal was that the austerity measures were not noticeable in the classes, but in the administration. A catch -up in the Austrian education system is also necessary: ”We are not good enough about the performance of the students, but also with regard to the equality of opportunities. I would like to improve both, we have a very tight schedule,” Return said.

“Krone”: As a Minister of Education, you want to save a total of 76 million euros this year alone. This should mainly affect infrastructure and administration. There is uncertainty between the rectors in the country – are there now concrete plans?
Christoph returns: Our goal as a federal government is to consolidate to make more investments possible. In the education sector we have succeeded in investing 450 million euros this year and at the same time we can be our savings of 76 million euros. Most of them are about savings in the administration, for example due to fewer external orders, digitization-We are now less printing than before and by a few positions in the Ministry of Education without use. The team education project will also be reduced, which will no longer be possible in classes with fewer than 15 students. This is an efficiency measure that is needed.

Do you want to save 76 million euros with these measures?
My goal was to save in the administration and that as little as possible can be felt in the classroom. Less than seven million are saved by reduced team education, the rest influences administration or other areas.

Your predecessor started the “Querzeiner” project – what about?
The project has settled very well, career changers are an enrichment for the education system. About ten percent of the new teachers are currently career changers, which is a good number and I am happy with that.

The educational leave was temporarily abolished at the end of March, it should be set again in January 2026 – what do the plans look like this?
The educational leave was no longer accurate in its previous form and cost too much. That is why it is necessary to reorganize the educational leave. The aim is for people to be better eligible and that the employer also has an advantage and that further development in his own professional field must also be promoted. This is currently being drawn up by the Minister of Social Affairs and then decide a new law.

For the first time there is a pink education minister, a hobbyhorse subject of the Neos. What is the previous Neos manuscript in the education sector?
We have reached a very ambitious, visionary coalition agreement in the education sector. I am especially satisfied because a catch in Austrian education is necessary. We are not good enough about the performance of the students, but also in terms of equality of opportunities. I would like to improve them both, so we have a very tight schedule to move a lot ahead. My vision is that every child likes to go to school – because teaching and school is easier.
