Diplomacy from Italy – Meloni calls with Pope for Ukraine -Flieden

Together with the new Pope Leo XIV, Italy wants to play a central role in the peace talks for Ukraine. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni therefore pulled diplomatic threads and on Tuesday with the Pope, the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Senskyj and other heads of government.

“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Today (Tuesday) has a telephone conversation with the Holy Father about the following steps for a fair and permanent peace in Ukraine,” said a press release of Meloni’s office evening.

And further: “The conversation followed yesterday’s phone call with US President Donald Trump and other European heads of state and government, in which the Italian Prime Minister was asked to check the willingness of the Holy Stool to accept negotiations.”

The Holy Father had agreed to talk about peace for Ukraine in the Vatican. “Prime Minister Meloni pressed her deep gratitude for the openness of Pope Leo XIV and for his tireless dedication to peace,” said the press release.

Phone calls with the heads of government
The Meloni office continued that the Italian head of government also had telephone conversations with France -President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, British Prime Minister Keir Strandmer, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the President of the Leyen. “It was agreed to maintain close coordination between the partners with regard to a new negotiating round with the aim of ceases -the fires and a peace agreement in Ukraine,” said it.

Senskyj wants to stay in touch with Meloni
The Ukrainian president wrote on social networks that he had a good conversation with Meloni. “We coordinate our positions. Italy supports all the efforts for a real peace. We have agreed to stay in touch with the next steps,” wrote Senskyj.

Trump promises negotiations in the Vatican
On Monday, US President Donald Trump had the prospect of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in the Vatican. Pope Leo XIV offered the Vatican State as a place of conversations about a truce, Trump wrote on his social media platform “Truth Social”. A two -hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin was “excellent,” said Trump.
