The Ukrainian President Wolodyymyr Senskyj visits the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday. According to the government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, it is about “the German support of Ukraine and the efforts for a ceasefire”.
At noon, Senskyj receives military honor in the Chancellery. Dan: press conference and an exchange with representatives of German companies. In the afternoon there is a meeting with federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Castle.
It is already the fourth visit to Senskyj in Berlin since the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. It takes place in a precarious situation – and coincides with the inaugural visit from Minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul in Washington.
War will “take longer”
In the past few days, Merz gave the impression that he had completely left faith in a solution at the negotiating table. Wars usually end through economic or military exhaustion of one of the two parties or on both sides, he said on Tuesday when he visited Finland. “We are clearly far from that in this war. That is why I expect that we may have to adjust for a long time.”
