So that the distinguishing distortion for domestic farmers who do not become existential help of solidarity, the Austrians do not want to expand the previous EU-wide customs exemption for the import of Ukraine. It must be decided in June.
Instead of anticipating the harvest time, alarm votes and worrying are ruled in the domestic courtyards: while our farmers are fighting for quality and existing in their areas, thousands of tons of Ukrainian cheap imports continue to flood on the European market and you press the prices for domestic products in the soil.
Import tree from Ukraine
A background: Since the tax-free opening of the EU markets in 2022, the Ukrainian agricultural import has literally exploded. “Our farmers can no longer keep track of nor in terms of price, nor mentally,” warns Mep Alexander Bernhuber. Together with the Lower Austrian Farmers’ Association Director Paul Nemecek, he demands an end to import and not “further as before”.
Since the EU-based exposure of rates for Ukrainian products, the import of poultry, sugar, bread grain and honey have exploded to the EU, this is also demonstrated by official figures from the EU committee: according to this, the import of certain agricultural products from Ukraine rose with a maximum of 240 percent compared to the years before the years. Especially affected: bread grain, honey, corn and poultry, all products that are also sufficiently generated in the EU.
But it’s not just about money, but also about disadvantages for consumers. “The quality of the products introduced is up to the debate. There are always reports about cage, poultry or pesticide, which have long been forbidden in the EU,” says Bernhuber.
The EU farmers understood the solidarity with Ukraine at the start of the war, but today, more than two years later, it is no longer about emergency aid, but about market distinction with a system through landfill prices and the lowest quality. That is why Bernhuber and Nemecek demand that the EU quickly returns to a system with rates and quantity limits, as was the case before the war.
They want to emphasize their concerns in Brussels by the new European Farmers’ Association, which was founded on the initiative of De Blauwe and Yellow Farmers. In the coming weeks there will be a confrontation in Brussels because the previous customs exemption is going on.
