Unemployment in Austria rose slightly in a weekly comparison. But that is normal in July and August, explains Labor Minister Martin Kocher. At the same time, he points out in a broadcast that the reduction in working time has decreased.
Currently, 296,825 people are registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS). This is a small plus (of 2046 people) compared to the previous week. Nevertheless, the situation on the labor market is still positive, Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) said on Tuesday. The increase is related to the “usual range of fluctuations for the season”. “The slight ups and downs in weekly unemployment that have now set in are common in July and August. There are currently no signs of a stronger downward trend in the labor market,” said Kocher. In some previous years, for example 2019 and 2020, more job seekers were registered.
Sober growth forecast
Referring to the general economic situation, the minister noted that high inflation could reduce growth. “Along with the uncertainties in energy supply, which are also increasing, we must assume that economic momentum will slow down even as federal government measures to offset inflation and secure energy supplies take effect.” Austria is likely to grow faster than most other EU countries from today’s perspective.
