The Basque government has pronounced its “deep discomfort” for the attitude of some regional presidents during the intervention of the Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, at the Presidents Conference that was held in Barcelona on Friday.
According to sources from Lehendakaritza, it is “unbearable” the lack of respect that is shown to “Euskera, Lehendakari herself and the Basque people”, after the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, left the room as soon as Pradales started speaking in Basque.
The Basque director also blames that other regional leaders will choose not to use the simultaneous translation devices that are possible to guarantee mutual understanding.
In his opinion, this attitude clashes with the spirit of the conference, which for the first time makes the use of CO -official languages possible – Catalan, Gallego and Basque – together with Spanish. “Respecting official languages is not a small gesture,” they have underlined the same sources that remember that it is a matter of “linguistic equality, institutional and democratic respect.”
“Respecting official languages is not a small gesture: it is a matter of language rights, institutional, cultural and democratic respect. Basque is an official language and heritage throughout Europe,” they have concluded.
