In the new Weapons Act, NEOs wants their own prevention package for schools

Date:

Behind the scenes, negotiations are currently being made of innovations in the Weapon Act. In addition to various psychological tests and higher age limits, the NEOs also ask for their own prevention package with a focus in schools.

After the murderous Spree in Graz with eleven dead at a Graz school, the coalition parties ÖVP, Spö and Neos now discuss how and where you can set up the obstacles for possession of weapons. As reported, a new arms law must be immediately presented and amoclets in the future. The government wants to present details about exact measures.

Also in focus on the position data
According to the Chancellery, in addition to the general criteria for possession of weapons, the use of position data must also be discussed politically. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) also spoke for the Minister Council in Luxembourg to gain access to data from the positioning authorities.

The perpetrator of the Graz legally obsessed with the weapons with which he killed people at school. He had completed a psychological test in a civil authority in March and had legally obtained a gun. The federal army, on the other hand, had determined the psychological instability of the Graz.

Why the weapons had still taken place was also a problem in the Security Council on Thursday evening. All parties argue that measures must in principle follow, even the FPö does not want to close “meaningful improvements”.

At the request of the “Krone”, the Neos Club chairman Yannick Shetty says: “In addition to stricter weapons laws and improved data exchange between authorities, a prevention package with a special focus in schools is needed.” The goal is that all people in Austria are safe.

For Shetty this includes measures such as the significant expansion of school psychology and massive investments in psychosocial support at our schools. “Safety starts with mental health and a social security network that caught people in crises and protects others,” continues Shetty.

Spö wants more victim protection
Spö Security spokesperson Maximilian Köllner comes in a similar notch and demands “better psychosocial care and more victim protection!”

More than 60,000 signatures for the prohibition of weapons for private individuals
Since Wednesday, more than 60,000 people have registered the #aufstehn Online for an immediate ban on firearm for private individuals. The claim is aimed at Karner and the federal government. “Austria has one of the most loose weapons in Europe,” says Philine Dressler, head of campaign at #Afstehn. More than 1.5 million firearms are officially registered in Austrian private ownership, with increasing trends.
