Chancellor’s Trip – Nehammer Wants to Talk About Smugglers in Cyprus

Date:

Relay transfer in Israel: While spectacular preparations to welcome the US president were already underway at Ben Gurion Airport, the Austrian government delegation flew to the next stop on their journey to the Middle East: the EU member state of Cyprus.

The first route after the landing in Larnaca led to the UN memorial to the three Austrian soldiers who died in a Turkish air raid in 1974. A meeting then took place with Major General Ingrid Margarethe Gjerdeseit, who has been in command of the UN peacekeepers on the island since 2021.

Migration of people smugglers the main topic during a visit to Cyprus
The focus of the talks with President Anastasiadis and Defense Minister Petrides is the fight against people smugglers, which has also hit Cyprus particularly hard.

Citizenship for Descendants of Holocaust Victims
Before his arrival from Israel, Chancellor Nehammer had granted Austrian citizenship to several descendants of victims of National Socialism. “We cannot undo the atrocities,” Nehammer said. “But we can give you what’s yours: citizenship.”
