Controversial treat – government gives all school directors 500 euros

Date:

Easter treat from the Minister of Education: For their actions during the pandemic, all school principals will receive 500 euros – a “reward” for their work in the two years of the pandemic, as they say. The NEOS are fiercely critical of that.

Martin Polaschek didn’t exactly get off to a good start: criticism has been trickling down to the ÖVP-appointed education minister for weeks, recently even the ÖVP-affiliated teachers’ union suggested that his company take a “company vacation”.

Teachers get nothing
Polaschek’s answer: a financial treat in the form of a one-time payment of 500 euros. However, this should not be given to the class, but to their bosses. In a letter to all school principals, the minister wrote: “Over the past two years, you have impressively demonstrated that as a director you are reliable, committed, goal-oriented and always act in the interest of the public interest, even in times of crisis. “

The money will be transferred to all heads of compulsory and federal schools. In federal schools, administrators should also receive the bonus. Cost: 3.2 million euros.

Huge commitment during pandemic
Since the start of the pandemic, school leaders have been faced with an enormous amount of work due to the corona measures. New regulations were often announced at very short notice and specifications were often changed again in a short time. Teachers’ representatives have repeatedly warned that schools are reaching the limits of their resilience.

At the end of last week, the ministry therefore announced that schools should be relieved by canceling or postponing evaluations, surveys and projects.

“Nothing done for better schools and kindergartens”
The donation of money for the executive floors is now being criticized: Polaschek has so far “done nothing for better schools and kindergartens”, says NEOS education spokeswoman Martina Künsberg Sarre, “and just when public criticism of the union is deafeningly loud, he opens up the cornucopia and give money.”
