After the terrible murder in Graz with eleven dead, the government now presents a package of measures. The laws of arms are tightened enormously, victims and survivors receive financial support. The number of child psychologists must also be increased in schools.
The government presents an extensive package of measures in response to the terrible bloody act in Graz. In this way the Weapon Act is huge and the psychological offers for students are expanded. There will also be financial help for victims and survivors. Transparent disabilities and information about social media for children and adolescents are also planned. Details are still being treated.
Criticism of random increase in minimum age
In the case of the Weapon Act, different screws are turned (see image). Above all, the minimum age for the purchase of weapons of 21 to 25 years is increased. However, there is a Maas in the C category (shotguns and guns). These can be purchased in advance with an age -dependent weapon card. Graz’s gun had used such a weapon next to a gun.
Lawyers criticize that the increase in the minimum age for weapon acquisition is “event legislation is tailored to this one perpetrator”. “There is no reason to take 25 years,” says the weapon expert and lawyer Raoul Wagner in an interview with the “Krone”.
“We have police officers who are 19 years old, we have soldiers who are 18, we have people at Wega and Cobra, they are probably 21 or 22. And there are pilots who are younger than 25. That makes no sense at all,” says Wagner. Careful competence tests would be sufficient.
Better data exchange between the authorities
The much bigger problem was the data exchange between the authorities, the then Minister of Defense Norbert Darabos (Spö) in 2009. “If you hadn’t changed that, the shooter could not have legally buy the weapons.” At the moment, the government also wants to start and promises improved data exchange between arms authorities and mental health care.
“Our schools must remain where the students can learn, grow and make friendships carefree,” says Chancellor Christian Stocker. The number of school psychologists must be doubled over the next three years and the prevention of radicalization and social isolation for young people must also be expanded. “Our safety starts with good mental health,” explains Foreign Minister from Beate Meinl Reisinger. “We do everything we can to prevent such an attack,” says Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler.
