The Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto believes that NATO will be overtaken. The reality of life had changed, but the military association would communicate 30 years ago. His statements come in an explosive time.
“NATO no longer has any right to exist. The Atlantic Ocean was once the center of the world, now it is the world. NATO has to adapt to the changed global reality,” said Crosetto on the sidelines of a conference at the University of Padua on Friday.
“In the past, the US and Europe were the center of the world, today there is the rest of the world on which a relationship must be established,” said Crosetto, which belongs to the “Fratelli d’Italia” ruling party (Brothers of Italy) by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“The world has changed”
“We often talk as if we lived 30 years ago, but everything has changed. We talk about Europe as if Europe still counts something. Perhaps there might have been something if there had been a political role if it had had a foreign policy or a defense. But his time is over and I say that: the world has changed,” the minister emphasized.
The United Nations could also not move as an organization. “The UN has nothing in the world, less than Europe, less than a state, less than China, less than India or less than Israel,” Crosetto added.
Despite the difficult situation, Italy does not have to worry about its safety for the time being, the minister assured. “Wars are still far away, even if the world is more difficult than four or five years ago,” said Crosetto, co -founder of the “Fratelli d’Italia”.
The minister leaves the line that Meloni had specified during the Ukraine War. Recently it appeared increasingly as a mouthpiece of the West and it was mainly struggling to put together the Military Alliance insight on the cherished exit fantasies of the US President Donald Trump.
Italy loses the connection
Croosettos announcements are particularly explosive in the light of the upcoming NATO top in The Hague. A huge increase in defense expenditure must be officially decided there. Rome has already failed in recent years with the current obstacle of two percent of GDP (see image above). In Greece, Italy is the EU country with the highest debt.
