Domestic politics is once again turbulent and the situation is deteriorating, especially for the ÖVP. The number of crises occurring simultaneously – rising inflation, fears of energy shortages, the corona pandemic and a possible escalation in the war in Ukraine – has probably been unique for decades. “Apart from the first two or three chancellors after World War II, nobody had it as hard as Karl Nehammer right now,” says “Krone” domestic policy journalist Ida Metzger in “Demanded” with Gerhard Koller.
As a chancellor you can barely gain anything at the moment, but you can lose a lot, as the current survey data for the ÖVP (but also for the Greens) suggests. Fearing the upcoming state elections, the old ÖVP phenomenon is currently starting again, with demands from the black-ruled states targeting their own chancellor – as Johanna Mikl-Leitner is currently doing with her call for an energy price cap.
Originally a demand from the SPÖ, it was taken over by the Lower Austrian governor last weekend – after that there was no stopping black governors. You can see other exciting assessments of Metzger, such as the FPÖ’s chances with Walter Rosenkranz in the federal presidential election campaign or the SPÖ’s current situation, in the video above.
