When it comes to peace, more than just good intentions are needed – political influence is needed. This is exactly what Europe is missing, says Tobias Lang, political scientist and director of the Austrian Center for Peace. In conversation with Krone.tv presenter Jana Pasching, he criticized the unstable EU course. Lang also deals with clear words towards the US.
Although American foreign policy under Donald Trump is “suddenly and unpredictable”, but: “The opportunities arising from American initiatives, should not be ignored in the conflict in the Middle East or in connection with Iran.” If you are realistic, you must acknowledge: without the US there will not be a sustainable solution. “It doesn’t help us to demonize international politics,” said Lang.
The political scientist says: “We are economically a power, but we are unable to seem united. We don’t use our political lever.” A central point for long: peace policy must also look for dialogue with those who are not for peace. “This is the only way to go into fixed conflicts. For Austria itself, Long wishes a wide social debate about the foreign policy course – you will learn more about this in the video above!
