Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) will travel to Turkey on Monday for talks. A meeting is planned with Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya at the start of the two-day visit. Schallenberg will speak with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Tuesday.
The politician also wants to visit the mausoleum of republic founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Ankara, on the basis of which Turkey concluded a friendship treaty with Austria. This year the two governments are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the treaty, which is still valid, as well as the 60th anniversary of a bilateral recruitment agreement that heralded the influx of Turkish guest workers into Austria after World War II.
Role as mediator
In the run-up to the trip, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned security policy, migration and Turkey’s role as a mediator in regional conflicts as topics. For example, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is trying to position himself as a mediator between the Ukrainian and Russian governments and also hosted direct talks between the conflicting parties shortly after the start of the war.
In the war in the Middle East he appears less diplomatic. The Turkish government clearly sided with Hamas and recently imposed a trade ban with Israel, its main economic partner.
