PSE-EE intervention in the plenary session on the situation caused by the war in Ukraine

Date:

Txarli Prieto has assured it is “incompatible” to cut taxes and increase costs. It is committed to coordinating and adding political, institutional and social wishes, “we can’t do it alone,” he said.

the parliamentarian of PSE-EE Txarli Prietohas argued that it is needed to “accommodate” the proposals for measures to face the crisis with “the real possibilities” and therefore “measure properly what we are doing so as not to exhaust the margin of action at this stage of these weeks or months”. According to him, “unity is necessary, but no less than responsibility”.

In his speech at the monographic plenary session held this Friday by the Basque Parliament on measures to deal with the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, the socialist representative argued that the Chamber would be “useful in helping, contributing and help solve the damage caused by the effects caused by the Russian invasion, as he pointed out, knowing we can’t do it aloneand that it is necessary to “coordinate, that it is necessary to add political will, inter-institutional will, social will”.

The socialist parliamentarian has stressed that this plenary session “doesn’t start from scratch”, as “the Basque government, the government of Spain and the European Council have already launched or participated in a policy that goes in different directions” to meet the needs of humanitarian aid , counter the “unjustified” rises in energy and fuel prices, cope with economic and production problems, or streamline the management of, among others, European funds.

After reviewing the measures taken so far in several areas, he pointed out that the Basque government “has the willingness and the resources to tackle problems because it has extensive budgets, including economic additions from European funding, because they have flexibility in the spending rules, and because there are remnants that can serve as a buffer for this situation”.

He has stated that “the pandemic and the war have disrupted everythinghave changed everything and, moreover, have come together over time to make answers and solutions more difficult”. requires “a certain political restraint, align the ideas and proposals with the real possibilities, quantify the measures and see if they can be realized”.

In this way, he believes it is possible to increase government spending “to a certain level as long as the flow of reasonable revenue is maintained”, because, as Prieto has emphasized, significantly lowering taxes and increasing spending are incompatible measures “Yes, it is possible to touch taxes temporarily so that it has a collective social and business profitability and that is how it is done,” he added.

Prieto has pointed out that the PSE-EE is “in governance and in solutions, in the unity of political and institutional action, and in the same unity of responsibility”, which includes telling citizens the truth, saying that this economic and social situation has the greatest uncertainty, because we do not know how long it will last and we also do not know what the costs will be”.

That – he added – requires that we carefully measure what we are doing so as not to exhaust the margins of action at this stage of these weeks or months, and that requires us to tell ourselves that this situation that is already costing us economically and socially, will continue in the future will cost us two planes in the individual and in the group”.

Finally, he stressed that “the best way out of this situation is the end of the war” and “in the meantime, solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine, humanitarian aid and support for the resistance.”
