After the Pride parade in the capital of Hungary, investigations were initiated against the mayor of the city. Gergegely Karacsony had declared the pride for an official celebration of the city of Budapest to prevent a ban. The police, on the other hand, showed a surprising mild for the participants.
Opposition politicians had feared that fines would be imposed in the masses because the meeting was officially forbidden in the operation of the government.
On the basis of the fact that investigations are being abandoned, the police said that the organizers had the citizens about the legal situation. Among them was Mayor Karacony. The left-green-liberal politician had succeeded in avoiding the prohibition: according to Hungarian law, municipal and national parties are not covered by the Meeting Act.
Police investigations are going on for four days against Karacony. According to the law, the organizer threatens in prison for up to a year.
Despite the prohibition a record participation
The right -wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban had changed laws and the Constitution in the course of a homophobic campaign and obtained a police offer at the event on the basis of this. Participation in prohibited events is considered an administrative crime and can be punished with fines of up to 500 euros. To identify individual participants, the police were allowed in advance to use face recognition software.
Despite the ban there were more people on the Budapest Pride Parade this year: the organizers spoke about more than 200,000 participants. Observers assess this as a damper for the power -conscious head of the Orban. He himself said “surprised” that the subject was still proud of the table despite the ban.
