Eklat on the geopolitical parquet! EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner was refused to enter the North African country on Tuesday by the Ostliby government. Brunner was even named “Persona Non Grata”.
Brunner and the European delegation had already arrived at Benghazi airport, when the former Minister of Finance of Austria and the current EU Commissioner for Internal and Migration was refused access and asked them to leave the country again immediately.
Libya is deeply divided
The order was granted by the Libyan government of National Stability (GNS), the opponent of the internationally recognized government of National Unit (GNU). The first checks the city of Benghazi, the last the city of Tripoli, but also the east of the country.
Since the civil war, which lasted almost ten years and the subsequent -the Fires, Libya has repeatedly exposed to armed conflicts. The Terrorist militia Islamic State also checked parts of the country for a while. Two competing governments are currently arguing about power.
Talk about illegal migration
Brunner as well as the Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Puiledosi and a delegation of Greek and Maltese officials had traveled to the country to advise on the recent increase in the arrival of irregular migrants from Libya in Europe.
The Greek Minister of Migration Thanos Plevris and the Maltese Minister of Internal Affairs, Byron Camilleri were also part of the delegation. After a meeting with the internationally recognized government in Tripoli, they should have had conversations with the rival, Ostlibysic government under Osama Hamad, which is connected to General Khalifa Hraftar, who also checks part of the country.
Stopped at the airport visit
The visit was abruptly canceled on Benghazi Airport. As the administration established in Benghazi has announced, the delegation had “ignored the national sovereignty of Libya”. The ministers were asked for immediate departure.
Already on Monday the Hamad government made it clear that foreign delegations can only enter the country with prior approval and move to Libya. The Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the incident and emphasized that he would talk to Piaaredosi about it.
Central transit state for migrants
Libya has been a central transit state for migrants fleeing to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea since the fall of ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011.
The head of the government of National Unity in Libya that was recognized by the UN, the ministers had previously presented a plan to contain migration to Europe. “With the support of various friendly countries, a large national campaign to combat human trafficking will start,” said Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah on Tuesday, according to the AFP press office.
However, countless migrants still opt for the routes above East -Leibyen, which are checked by the competing government. In addition to reports about human trafficking, dragging and torture, it is also the pressure on the Greek islands, which the EU wants to put an end to.
