US President Donald Trump has never actually made a secret of his admiration towards his Russian counterpart. But recently he hit hard tones opposite Vladimir Putin. But how can the Republican change of significance be explained?
Is the “bromance” of two of the most powerful men around the world?
In recent days, Trump has found unusually sharp words for the behavior of the Kremlin chef. The British ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the relationship between the two powerful men in the past as a “strange kind of gay-erotic fascination”. But that should be over.
“We get a lot of nonsense from Putin,” Trump recently explained in the White House. The Kremlin boss is “very nice, but it turns out that it is useless”. Because Putin killed too many people, Trump noticed – so the US of Ukraine would send some defensive weapons.
But compassion for the Ukrainian people is probably not behind the change of the heart of Trump. On the contrary, the US president must be disappointed to be unable to exchange one of his election promises: before the elections, Trump had stated that he could end the war within 24 hours. However, his diplomatic efforts have not shown any fruits so far. On the contrary – the attacks on Ukraine were even strengthened on the Russian summer offensive.
Trump apparently likes the role of the supposed peace pent. In the Gaza Strip and Iran, Trump explained that he had ended the conflicts alone. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even presented the American president for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Does Trump want to remain unpredictable?
But it can also be a political tactic, as the magazine “Spiegel” speculates. Trump can also work on his reputation as an unpredictable player. This “Madman theory” once worked well with his predecessor Richard Nixon.
It is also quite possible that there is no special strategy behind the change of course. Depending on what Trump is simply broken down from his consultants and currently likes, the theory is trumpeted. It is not relevant whether it is in contradiction with what the president explained a few days, weeks or months ago.
Kremlin reacts calmly to Trump -criticism
According to Trump’s recent statements, Russia responds calmly. Trump has a hard style in his expressions. “We expect that we will continue our dialogue with Washington,” said Putin’s spokesperson Dmitrij Peskow. It is hoped that the United States will continue to try “to bring the Ukrainian unification process to the political and diplomatic level”. MP Maria Butina also shows that it is known that Trump changed “five times a day”.
The political scientist of Moscow, Dmitrij Trenin, also warns against evaluating the statements, but also makes some criticism of the sound: “We must be aware that Trump is not the king of America and that the Trump revolution, which was called at the beginning of the year, seemed to have been replaced in the American Komp’s own development.
