The seat in the parliament of the Security Council is integrated into the UN application

Date:

The National Council must be involved in the application for a non-independent seat in the UN Security Council. Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS) campaigned on Friday for a “red-white-red shoulder closure”, but dampened the expectations of a safe success of the candidacy.

The application is “very complicated,” the politician said, “it’s a challenge,” also because Germany is running again. “Out of red and white -red proud”, however, they want to strive. According to the application that has been decided in the National Council, the parliament must be actively involved in the candidacy. Meinl Reisinger, for example, must regularly pass on information about priorities and progress, and parliamentary international contacts can also be used.

Austria has a tradition as a neutral intermediary and a special responsibility for multilateralism, some MPs agree. With the candidacy for the seat in the UN Security Council 2027/2028, they wanted to “contribute to peace and safety in the world”.

FPö criticizes high costs
The FPö was the only party that did not support the application. She criticized the costs for the application of 20 million euros and that neutrality was gradually removed was “only tailored to paper”.

ÖVP MP Andreas Minnich replied that the official stay of Vienna for international organizations was an important factor for the business location. As a small, neutral country, Austria can make an important contribution as a brave defender in the Security Council.

Austria was the last member of the UN Security Council in 2009/2010. This consists of five permanent and ten non-trading members. The five permanent members are France, Russia, the US, China and Great Britain. Tasks are “the protection of world peace and international safety”. The World Security Council can make decisions for the Member States, for example in the event of attacks and a break of peace.
