Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) hopes for a “political solution” when it comes to cross -border transit traffic when he came to Rome. “The Brenner is a subject that is mainly concerned with us because Tyrol is seriously influenced by the truck passages.”
“We speak of around 2.4 to 2.5 million truck trips a year. This reaches a loading limit,” said Stocker in Rome. The burner highway could not be expanded further – it is limited in its capacity and the current could not be increased.
Relocation to Spoor, trench system
“On the one hand, we are therefore concerned with stimulating the relocation of freight transport to the Rail, especially with the Burner Basic tunnel. On the other hand, I think a slot system is useful. I will tackle this subject here in Rome because it could make an improvement of the distribution of the passages,” Stocker said Melongi.
“A political solution is needed”
Regarding the lawsuit for the European Court of Justice (ECJ) against Tyrol’s measures to contain transit traffic: “I am aware that there is a current procedure that is still open. But regardless of how the court concludes, little will change in the real situation on the burner.”
That is why a political solution is needed – “because whatever the judgment is, the problems remain on the spot,” said Stocker.
