There was loud cheering and whistling – as reported – on Saturday at the 800th anniversary of the city of Eferding for Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer. Comments on krone.at about the incident range from “Good! All current actors should come to their performances. Don’t think a majority are satisfied with their performance yet” to “Ungrateful people, he works every day for our beautiful country, gives everything, full agenda and then something like that, we say thank you.”

A video of the incident appeared online Monday – posted online by FPÖ TV. When Federal President Van der Bellen and Governor Stelzer entered the village square, a violent flute concert followed. The atmosphere was reminiscent of aggressive football hooligans. What is striking: the critics must not have been there by accident, some even accompanied the politicians with rattles they had brought with them.

However, the locals apparently did not want their anniversary to be disturbed and gave the political guests loud applause, as the mayor of Eferding, Christian Penn (SPÖ) told the “Krone”: “That was inappropriate and disrespectful. But I am proud of how our Eferdingers have responded.”

What goes on in the minds of some fellow human beings? Unfortunately, some anti-vaccine fanatics seem to have completely lost respect and decency in the two-year pandemic.
You don’t go to birthday parties to harass guests and spoil the mood for others. If you want to protest, do so in the voting booth – or at the regular demos or „walks“. Our democracy offers plenty of opportunities to express your displeasure. But the time and place have to be right: a birthday party is definitely the wrong place for this!
